Behind the Scenes Wedding Prep at Oxon Hill Manor

Oxon Hill Manor garden gateToday I made a huppah pole delivery to Oxon Hill Manor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. The grounds and the building are so lovely, I thought you’d appreciate some behind-the-scenes pics.

These pics are from the early stages of the wedding prep. There are no people in the photos, because I didn’t want to interrupt anyone to ask their permission to take their photo, but as I took the photos, there was a lot going on.

The wedding coordinator was Pavaune Pearson of Invited Event Design and Production. I’ve worked with her a couple of times, and she’s the kind of wedding coordinator that’s great to work with – she’s very creative and asks great questions on behalf of her clients.

The blossoming branch centerpieces were especially elegant, with classic style vases that complemented the manor’s architecture and exhuberant blossoming branches. I’ve invited the florist to email me her contact info. If I get it, I’ll be sure to pass it on to you.

Judaica Wedding Gifts at Israeli Accents in Rockville, Maryland

Yair Emanuel Judaica Rockville Maryland MD

A selection of items at the Israeli Accents Judaica shop in Rockville, Maryland. The pomegranate-motif trivet is in the middle of the top row.

A few days ago I walked into Israeli Accents, a Judaica shop in Rockville, Maryland, and walked out with more than I had planned. I saw a beautiful, deep- red pomegranate-motif trivet designed by Judaica artist Yail Emanuel, and bought two. If you’re looking for Judaica for a gift, Yair Emanuel’s wide range of Judaica and Jewish-themed items for the home are beautiful and widely-popular.

After buying the trivets I went online to find an image of the design, but could not find it online. Just another reason to stop in your local Judaica shop when looking for a gift for Passover or a wedding.

I’m going to give the trivets as gifts for the two fabulous women at whose homes I’ll be spending the upcoming Passover Seders. While driving home, I seriously considered keeping one of the trivets for myself, but I’ve found in my life that I’ve never done better holding on to something when I could give it away. Jean and Anita, if you read this, try and act surprised when I give you your hostess gift. Can’t wait to see you all!

Beyond Green Weddings: Green and Just Weddings

Jews United for Justice Celebration Buying GuideJews United for Justice (JUFJ) in Washington, DC held its annual award dinner last week, which makes this a good time to give a shout out for JUFJ’s event planning guide, Green & Just Celebrations. The guide goes beyond the basic buy-local green wedding tips. JUFJ helps you dig deep, so that your once-in-a-lifetime wedding purchases can be as green and just as you can make them. Among the topics covered are buying rings and negotiating the venue contract.

Most of the vendors in the buying guide are local to the Washington, DC area, but some are national organizations that you can find online. And the ideas work where ever in the world you raise your huppah.

By the way, at the award dinner, JUFJ honored four Washington, DC and Maryland area activists:

  • David Cohen, co-founder of the Advocacy Institute.
  • Carla Furstenberg Cohen, civil rights activist and founder of the independent Washington, DC bookstore Politics and Prose. Carla passed away a couple of weeks before the award ceremony.
  • Gustavo Torres, founder of CASA de Maryland.
  • Elissa Froman, legislative associate for the National Council of Jewish Women. As a student at The George Washington University founded the GW Jewish Progressive Political Association.
